A farm labourer G Durai (25) of Pikkili village in Pennagaram taluk in Dharmapuri, who self-immolated himself in front of the Tahsildar and other government officials on Thursday, succumbed to burns. The officials had gone there to evict his family from the piece of poramboke land encroached upon by them.

The youth, who suffered 70 per cent burns, was rushed to the Dharmapuri Government Medical College and Hospital, where he died. Pennagaram police have registered a case. Police said that Durai’s father Gopal was farming in the piece of government poramboke land in Pikkili village that is close to a burial ground.Â
Due to repeated petitions of the villagers for an access to the burial ground, Collector S Vivekanandhan ordered Pennagaram Tahsildar Sethu Lingam to inspect the encroachment. The Tahsildar ordered the family to vacate the land.Â
As Gopal and his family members refused to comply, the revenue officials carried out an eviction drive. Protesting it, Durai doused himself with kerosene and threatened to self-immolate. But, the officials did not stop.
