Inspired by Kalam, samosa man develops green thumb
A samosa seller, who was inspired by Abdul Kalam’s idea of saving the environment, has embarked on a mission to plant saplings at the Kalam’s memorial on his second anniversary. As a tribute to the Missile Man, he began his 380-km walk from Tirupur on July 14 and hopes to end it at Peikarumbu on July 27.

With saplings and Kalam’s photo in the front and a flex banner at the back with the message of Kalam he met people on the way and asked them to conserve nature. At Teppakulam in Madurai, he met students and the public and spread the message of conserving nature.
People also took selfies with Aiyappan. “Seeing my work many have come forward to donate but I have never accepted them,” says Aiyappan. Some even many came forward to donate during his walk but he refused. His only request to people is to plant more trees and maintain them. He also requested the officials to allow him to plant at least one of his saplings at Kalam memorial and it would be a great honour for him says Aiyappan. He said that he revered Kalam and in one of his ten commandments, he had asked people to plant trees.
Taking inspiration from his commandments, he had begun to plant trees from his small income. “I turned into a saviour of environment nearly six years ago”, he remarks. Aiyappan who sells samosas at Tirupur had planted more than 2,000 trees at 307 school campuses at Tirupur and its surrounding areas. He also encourages school students to plant trees.
