Thousands offer ‘tharpanam’ to forefathers on Adi Amavasai
Tens of thousands of people from various parts of the country took a holy dip in the Agnitheertham sea in front of the Ramanathaswamy temple, Sethukarai and Devipattinam seashores and paid obeisance to their forefathers by offering ‘tharpanam’ on the occasion of Adi Amavasai (new moon day) on Sunday.

A large number of people later visited the Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram during the occasion. Similarly, at Tiruchendur too, people offered special prayers at the Subramaniya Swamy Temple.
At Kanniyakumari also people performed ‘tharpanam’ near the beach. The banks of the Tamirabarani river and Courtallam falls were the other places where people thronged to pay respect to their ancestors.
People offered special prayers at Tamirabarani River and at temples in Tirunelveli district. Dharpanam was also offered at Courtallam falls. As it was Sunday, overwhelming crowd was witnessed in all the temples and water bodies where ‘tharpanam’ was offered for their ancestors.
