Sri Lankan students keen to learn Sangam Literature in land of Cholas

The government formed by Maithripala  Sirisena post civil war in Sri Lanka had promised several schemes for Tamils.  A number of educational institutions had been established in the North East and North Western provinces which are mostly Tamil settlements. The University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka had signed an MoU with the Thanajavur Tamil University in 2016. 

From then on, the university has been  providing enrichment programmes to students of BA Tamil from the Peradeniya University with funding from Tamil Nadu state government. In the first batch, 15 students from Sri Lanka participated. This year, 18 students attended a 10-day workshop on “Ethics in Sangam Literature”. 

They would familiarise themselves with Tamil classics like “Pathuppattu”, “Ettuthogai and the ethics they taught during Sangam era. The students said that the workshop threw light on several aspects of life. “We also teach Sangam literature there, but the teachers here delve deep into the subject,” said to V Maheswaran,  Head of the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya.
