Speaker advises legislators to respect the Chair

“When the bell rings, the speech should be wound up, whomever it may be,” Dhanapal said, while recalling as to how he had concluded his speech 34 years ago, in the same Assembly on the instruction from the then Speaker during the budget session in 1982-1983. 

“The bell rang. Speaker intervened and asked me to conclude the speech as I had already spent 13 minutes. I thanked the House and sat down without uttering another word. The legislators should weigh this against the present,” he said and added, “My hands get sore, since I keep on ringing the bell. Even the brass bell kept on my table got worn-out and my staff has exchanged it with a silver one, which would also end up like its predecessor. 

The legislator would never conclude the speech though.”  “I’ve put up with their acts, since I know the driving force behind is their enthusiasm to ask questions. Respect the Chair not me as an individual. 

Respect anybody who chairs the House. Be it the ruling party or the Opposition, self-introspect on your actions in this session,” Dhanapal advised the House. The Speaker recorded his appreciation for the spurt in the number of questions that were being filed by the legislators.
