River Water Parliament launched in state
In a move to protect water bodies, a river water parliament had been constituted here on Tuesday with senior farmers in the state. The members belonging to various levels of farming community would focus on protecting and maintaining the water bodies for 10 years.

The River Water Parliament, a community water management was proposed by the representatives of Retrieval of Tamil Nadu Rivers and Water Resources belonging to various walks of life after witnessing the success of a similar programme in Alwar district of Rajastan.Â
Despite this the ‘Parliament’ will get no legal recognition for the resolutions passed, provided the government acknowledges the moral status and need for such community management to protect rivers.Â
Stakeholders of the Parliament said that Cauvery, Vaigai, Palaru, Thamirabarani, Thenpennai, and Kothayar river in Kanniyakumari district would be ensured their environmental rights.Â
The River Parliament will ensure whether the sand quarrying practice has adhered to rules and regulations drafted by governments. They would also propose for minor check dams after studying the feasibility in all the six major rivers in the state. This apart, the parliament would identify encroachments and alert the officials for initiating action.Â
