Theni collector told to file report on giant well in land of OPS's wife

The Madurai HC Bench on Tuesday directed the Theni Collector to file a report in response to a petition seeking direction to withdraw the power connection to a land owned by former CM O Panneerselvam’s wife Vijayalakshmi at Lakshmipuram in Theni district, where a large well has been sunk.

Rengaswamy of Lakshmipuram, in his petition, had stated that Lakshmipuram, a village in Theni district, has around 5,000 acres of farmlands. There were two wells in the village to cater to the drinking water needs and one of them was dug up was with public contribution.

The second well was in the land of Vijayalakshmi and even before it was dug up, locals opposed it claiming that it would drain the water in the common well. But Panneerselvam’s family used giant motors to draw water from the well and supply it to neighbouring villages. This is against the TNEB rules.

When the petition came up for hearing, a bench, consisting of justices K K Sasidharan and G R Swaminathan, directed the Theni Collector to submit a report by August 1.
