Sub-standard pipes used by ONGC, charges Nedumaran

Alleging that the ONGC had laid sub-standard pipes across Kathiramangalam village that had led to the crude oil leakage, Tamilar Desiya Munnani president P Nadumaran urged here on Monday that the government should constitute an inquiry commission and initiate immediate action against the firm.

After visiting the Kathiramangalam protesters lodged in the central prison here, Nedumaran said,  the police have registered cases against the protesters including the Anti Methane Project Movement Coordinator Prof T Jayaraman under various IPC sections just for leading the protest.

“It was not a protest propelled by him but one volunteered by the public to safeguard their livelihood,” said Nedumaran.

Meanwhile, he said that the bail petition for the arrested protesters will be heard by the  Madras High Court on July 19 and they will hopefully get the bail. Charging the police personnel with checking all those who entered the village, he said, “It is an atrocity that needs to be stopped immediately,” pointed out Nedumaran.

“If the chief Minister does not initiate immediate action against the ONGC, which had spoiled the agricultural lands in the village, the entire Cauvery delta will rise against the government,” Nedumaran added.

Withdraw police personnel from village: Residents
More than 200 residents organised a one-day token fast on Monday. They gathered at the ground of the Ayyanarkoil temple and asked the ONGC to leave the village. They also wanted police forces to be withdrawn from the village and its surroundings as they felt it was an intrusion into their privacy. A struggle committee comprising four men, four women each from the ten streets of the village was constituted on Sunday night.
