Lifestyle modifications key reason behind rise in C-Sections
Tamil Nadu, among a few other states, has reportedly been seeing a rise in the number of C-Section surgeries, data compiled from hospitals across each state have shown.

With unwarranted C-Sections known to have harmful effects, gynaecologists say that the main reason for the same is the lifestyle modifications of the mother resulting in various problems during pregnancy. While the recommendation of the World Health Organisation suggests that deliveries through C-Section should normally be in the range of 10 to 15 per cent of the total deliveries, some states are reporting high percentages.
Tamil Nadu reported this to be 34 per cent, while Telangana 54 per cent. “Guidelines formed 50 years ago had required C-Sections to be in the range of 10 to 15 per cent. However, at a time when lifestyle diseases are on the rise, expecting the guidelines to remain the same, is impossible,” said Dr Sampath Kumari of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI).
“Last year, there were reports that showed that Type II Diabetes is on the rise among women in Urban Tamil Nadu. Obesity is another cause of concern. Keeping such factors in check, is the only way to reduce the number of C-Section surgeries.” said Dr Meenakshi, a diabetologist.
Dr Meena, former RMO, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said, “The state does not perform any unnecessary C-Sections. We take into account the condition of the mother and the baby and perform the surgeries only when required. The patient’s lifestyle modifications are such that they cannot tolerate pain,”.
