Kovai blast convict shifted to govt hospital

It was a sigh of relief for the private hospital at Papanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore that has been treating life convict I Abuthakir since 2012, as he was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). The shifting despite pending dues to the tune of several lakh of rupees for treatment was based on the Madras High Court’s direction.

Abuthakir was among those, who were arrested in connection with the serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore that claimed 58 lives and left more than 250 persons injured in 1998. The accused was lodged in the Madurai Central Prison where he and three others had murdered assistant jailor Jayaprakash in the year 2000. While, he served seven years for his role in the bomb blasts, he is now serving life conviction for the murder.

The convict, who was shifted to the Coimbatore Central Prison in 2008, over the nine years, was in jail for a mere 333 days, due to his medical condition. He was suffering from renal problems. Between 2008 and 2012 he was granted leave on 11 occasions. In 2012, his brother Sikandar filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking admission for the convict in a private hospital for kidney transplant.

Based on a court direction, he was admitted in the private hospital here. On Saturday, around 6.30 pm, Abuthakir was shifted to the Intensive Male Care Unit of CMCH. Hospital sources said that he was fine, but will undergo various tests for a couple of days. He would then be shifted to the Convict Ward in the same hospital. Five armed policemen were stationed for his security.
