Relief granted to Thanjai mishap victims

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday announced an assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the families of 10 people, who were killed in a bus-mini-van collision at Vallam in Thanjavur district on Friday night.

In a statement here, he also announced an assistance of Rs 50,000 each to 23 injured, who were undergoing treatment. He said the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), which was proceeding to Thanjavur from Tiruchy collided with the mini-van carrying steel rods. 

The protruding steel rods pierced through the right side of the bus after it rammed into the mini-van. While five passengers from the bus and the driver of the mini-van were killed on the spot, two others died on way to the hospital. Palaniswami added that two others died after they failed to respond to treatment. 

Meanwhile, Transport Minister said, “In the initial inquiry, it was found that both the drivers of mini-van and the TNSTC bus driver failed to adhere to the traffic norms. And strict action will be initiated against those who violate the norms.” 

Agriculture Minister R Doraikannu along with Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam the MLAs visited the injured on Saturday.
