It is ‘Good and Simple Tax’, claims Union Minister Jayant Sinha
Terming Goods and Services Tax (GST) as Good and Simple Tax, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha has said that it is not aimed at stabilising price and increasing the tax to GDP ratio. He was interacting with industry representatives at Tirupur and Coimbatore on GST.

Sinha explained that it was the key for providing better education, healthcare and infrastructure. Stating that contribution of tax to GDP in India stood at a mere 16 to 17 per cent, he claimed that it is less than our competitor China where it is 21 to 22 per cent. He pointed out that check posts have been removed in 22 States and this has reduced cost of transportation by 10 per cent to 30 per cent.
“This will reflect with cost reduction of products and import of fuel,” he said. Representatives of the grinder industry told the minister that Coimbatore is home to manufacturing grinders in the country and increasing compounded tax on the industry from 17 pc to 28 pc will affect manufacturers and consumers.
“Idly and dosa are like lifelines in Tamil Nadu and therefore we want GST on grinders to be reduced to 12 per cent,” they said. Sinha said he would present it before the GST Council in the next sitting.
There were six to seven major issues that were brought to the ministry by various players in the aviation sector. They were taken to the Ministry of Finance before the roll out and 70 to 80 per cent of the issue were successfully resolved before June 30.
“The biggest issue was the global ticketing systems with new GST system. But it was resolved before June 30,” he added.
