    Ex-Union Minister Raja acquitted in poll code case

    Former Union Telecom Minister A Raja and 39 other Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionaries and cadres were acquitted by a Mettupalayam Court from the election violation code case that was slapped against them during the 2014 parliamentary elections. Party cadre celebrated the verdict by lighting fireworks and distributing sweets.

    Raja was the DMK’s MP candidate for the Nilgiri Constituency while his closest contender was AIADMK C Gopalakrishnan, who is the sitting MP. It is learnt that on March 21, 2014,. Raja’s camp received information about cash for votes distributed by the AIADMK. 

    Flying squad 

    Based on their information, the flying squad led by block development officer Rani inspected a lodge where the AIADMK allegedly stacked cash for votes. During the turn of events the DMK personnel, also resorted to a road blockade, following which Rani lodged a complaint with Mettupalayam police against Raja and 40 others for restraining her from performing her duties. The case was tried before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Mettupalayam. 

    One of the accused Kutti Mani died during the course of the trial. On completion of the trial, Judicial Magistrate R Saravanababu in his verdict on Tuesday acquitted Raja and the 39 others as there was not enough evidence to prove the charges against them.
