The deceased identified as Muthukrishnan (47), from Thoothukudi, was working in the US. He had divorced his wife after returning to India in 2013. He had met a woman lawyer regarding the divorce case and soon they got into a relationship.
As he started frequenting the house of the woman lawyer at Palayamkottai, one Rajagopal, a lorry driver, who was close to the lawyer, had warned him to stay away from her. Despite repeated warnings Muthukrishnan had continued the relationship. On May 19, a fight broke out between Muthukrishnan and Rajagopal.
Rajagopal, who was slapped during the quarrel, decided to take revenge. He kidnapped Muthukrishnan on May 22 when he was on the way to meet the woman lawyer. Muthukrishnan was taken to a deserted spot and was murdered by Rajagopal and his friends.
His body was packed in a gunny bag, loaded inside the car and the vehicle was pushed into a water-filled stone quarry at Thalayuthu. Meantime, mother of Muthukrishnan, Ammamuthu, had filed a missing case at Thoothukudi South police station.
When police traced the call records of Muthukrishnan, it was found that he had frequently talked to the lawyer and Rajagopal. Rajagopal was picked up and during interrogation he confessed to murdering Muthukrishnan.
Based on the information provided by him police recovered the body of Muthukrishnan from the stone quarry. However, the woman lawyer is yet to be traced.
