Monorail project will be put on track: Minister
The state government has decided to introduce the monorail project in Chennai, which was first announced by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2006, and integrate it with the existing and upcoming transport facilities, Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar announced in the State Assembly on Saturday.

Moving the demand for grants for his department, he said the monorail scheme would be implemented in two routes in the city at a cost of Rs 6,402 crore to ease congestion and augment the transport network. “It will be integrated with the existing and upcoming transport facilities in the metropolis’’, he added. He said the Monorail project will approximately cover 43.48 km.Â
While the first route will be from Porur to Vadapalani with link from Poonamallee to Kathipara junction near Guindy (20.68 km), the second stretch would be from Vandalur to Velachery (22.80 km). He said the first stretch would be implemented at a cost of Rs 3,267 crore with public private participation on design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis. The plan for the second phase, which would come up at a cost of Rs 3,135.63 crore, has been submitted to the Centre for its approval.Â
A proposal for the monorail project was first announced by the late CM Jayalalithaa in 2006 for a distance of 300 km comprising 18 corridors. However, it faced legal hurdles. Meanwhile, the AIADMK was defeated in the 2006 Assembly polls. When Jayalalithaa returned to power in 2011, she had said that the monorail project would be revived.
