According to Child Line officials, they received a call at their toll free number on Wednesday morning about the proposed marriage between a minor girl and a 31 year old worker of a tiffin stall. Based on the information, a team of officials including those from Social Welfare Department rushed to the spot.
However, by the time they reached the venue on Thanjavur Road, the wedding was over. But, the officials held talks with the parents of the couple and rescued the girl who had passed on the information to the Child line with the help of her friends.
Meanwhile, the Child Line received another call from an elderly woman. She told them that a 14-year-old who was married off in her neighbourhood had sought refuge at her home. Upon inquiry, it was found that the girl who lost her father was married to a 35-year-old construction coolie.
Officials said that the girl did not consent to the marriage that had taken place at Samayapuram temple.  She had escaped from the groom’s house and sought the help of the elderly woman. Subsequently, the team rescued the girl.
“In both the cases, the marriage was completed, the officials will approach the court to render the marriages null and void. Until then, the girls will be kept in the Government observation home,” said A Albert Manoharan, Child Line Coordinator.
