Out of 7.5 lakh applicants only 34,979 managed to pass. Around 3,000 teachers had to undergo the test despite being employed in government and government-aided schools for years.

G Venkat, a Chemistry teacher from Kanchipuram ,said, “We were expected to prepare for the exam while we were on duty. While the freshers had the time to prepare we could prepare only after the duty hours in the evening. What irks us is we are denied incentives because of this test.” He further added that earlier the government said that every applicant would get 10 chances to clear the exam in five years, but the state had conducted the test only twice in five years.

TNTA State president PK Ilamaran, said, “In 2010 teachers were recruited under government orders 152, 153. The recruitment of all the teachers was sanctioned on the same date. However, the verification process was done in a phased manner. It was during this period that the state government had issued an order to make TET mandatory for all teachers.

Teachers recruited in 2010 were exempted except a batch whose verification process is still pending.” “Teachers from government-aided schools hired around the same time were asked to take the test too. For the other 3000 teachers in government-aided schools, this was said to be the last chance. However, since the performance is bad and the difficult level too was high, we will make representations to the minister and the authorities.”
