“It will cater to the needs of industries and huge kitchens. It has a number of advantages over the conventional 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder,” Chief General Manager (CGM – LPG), Tamil Nadu State Office, LKS Chauhan, said.

He said that the product (cost per kilogram) is priced on a par with the 19 kg commercial cylinders and will attract the same 18 per cent tax under GST. “It will be sought after by big kitchens and industries that use other forms of fuels,” he added.

“It has a special valve that makes it much safer than handling a chain of commercial cylinders in a cylinder bank and connecting them to a common point through multiple flexible hoses. Jumbo also occupies lesser space. Though it can hold the quantity of 23.5 commercial cylinders it will occupy the space of less than 10 cylinders. Quick installation  time and minimum maintenance are among other advantages,” Chauhan added.

“We are marketing the product among possible customers. There will not be difficulty in meeting high demand. Customers will have to opt for a pair of cylinders with a deposit of Rs 1.1 lakh per cylinder. The cost of a 450 kg refill is around Rs 24,000,” said Yogaraani Suresh, Deputy General Manager (LPG-S) for Coimbatore area.

Of IOCL’s 91 LPG bottling plants across the country only two bottling plants (one each at Coimbatore and Delhi) can bottle and handle Jumbo. Stating that it would cost Rs. 25 lakh for making an existing LPG bottling plant ready to refill Jumbo cylinders, he said that based on demand they will be making this available in the other bottling plants.

At present, the bottling plant at Coimbatore is the only one among the 13 bottling plants in Tamil Nadu that will handle Jumbo. It will cater to the needs of Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode districts.
