Egg rate to be fixed thrice a week: NECC

The decision was taken at the special rate fixation committee meeting of the NECC held at Namakkal on Thursday afternoon. It was decided that egg rate will hence forth be fixed at 5 pm every Monday, Thursday and Saturday. 

The rate fixed on Monday will be in effect for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday’s rate will be for Friday and Saturday, while Saturday’s price will be for Sunday and Monday. Over the years, NECC fixed egg rates on a day to day basis based on demand and supply here and the rates in nearby markets on a forward trading basis, wherein egg rate was fixed at 12.15 every afternoon. 

“The stocks were already dispatched in the morning with a delivery challan. It resulted in uncertainty on the part of the farmers over the price they would get as it is bound to change for or against them,” said Vangili, Subramaniam vice president of Tamil Nadu Egg Farmers Federation. 

The member of the rate fixation committee said that in the coming days the stock will dispatch with the bill, which is mandatory for GST. The new rate fixation pattern will help regulating the egg trade industry in Namakkal which produced 2.75 crore to 3 crore eggs a day. 

However, there was some difference in opinion over rate fixation among the close to 20 members who participated in the rate fixation committee meeting on Thursday. It was over inclusion of commission for traders in price fixed by the NECC. 

“Today’s wholesale price of egg stands at Rs 4.10, including commission of 40 paise. This varies from time to time. We wanted the farm price to be announced as wholesale egg price,” he said. 

Members of the committee said that including trader’s commission in wholesale egg price will burden the poultry farmers. They hope that farm price will soon be fixed as wholesale egg price, so that traders will be accountable for their transaction.
