Commuters might soon be able to shuttle between metro stations without carrying either a ticket or smart card, courtesy a software which would enable them pay for the commute using smartphones.

A CMRL official told DTNext, “People will not have to bother about carrying cash or even the smart card.

All that they (commuters) need is a smartphone. The money would be deducted from traveller’s e-wallet as soon as they show the smartphone to the electronic reader,” the officer explained.

“A software is under development. It might take a few weeks,” he said. CMRL had recently launched its app, which provides the correct time of metro train arrival and departure and fare structure.

The mobile-enabled software system would be an upgrade on the contactless smart card system being expanded by CMRL after it launched services on the underground stretch from Koyambedu – Nehru Park. Metro has also floated a fresh tender worth Rs 1 crore to procure more contactless smart cards which would help commuters enjoy a 10 per cent discount on fare.
