MSU to offer free education and scholarship to transgender students

“Free education will be given to transgender students taking admission in any course. Moreover, meritorious students will be provided a stipend of Rs 3,000,” he said, adding, the move is aimed at eliminating social stigma and stratification in educational institutions as well as the society.
The news has brought cheer among the transgender community. Swetha Sudhakar, a transgender activist, said, “It is a good initiative, but it has come a tad too late. However, since transgender students stay away from home, a stipend of Rs 3,000 is not enough and the government should consider increasing the stipend.”
She added that the government should also offer education free of cost from the elementary level. Jaya, another activist, said “It is a welcome move. We conducted a cultural programme in Tirunelveli, in which the Vice-Chancellor was present. At that time, he said that he would take steps in this regard.”
