Amma kalviyagam to start coaching centres for competitive exams
Around 15 State Board Class 12 toppers were felicitated by former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam at the Amma Kalviyagam Awards held on Tuesday.

A number of specialists from various fields were also present at the event and addressed the students and parents. K Swaminathan, former IT wing secretary of AIADMK, said, “The website “ammakalviyagam.in” is an online platform created to help students prepare for Boards as well as competitive exams. There are three aspects to it: for students writing Class 12 examinations, for those preparing for IIT-JEE and thirdly, employability training programmes for young graduates.”
The site was officially launched by former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam to coincide with the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s 69th birth anniversary in March. “Amma wanted to expand the paradigm of IT. In 2015 December, I suggested to her the idea of an online hub for learning. She immediately approved it and asked me to consult O Panneerselvam. It was he who gave the name ‘Amma Kalviyagam’. However, I told them that I would need one year to work on the project. Unfortunately, she was no more when we launched,” said Swaminathan, adding, “We now have 3.75 lakh students who have registered with the website. We have more than 3,000 lessons and around 650 hours of lessons.”
Many students find the transition from school to college difficult. Talking to the students, Chandrasekhar Chenniappan, HR expert, asked the students to be responsible about their new-found independence. “Not just yourself, but also be responsible to society. Also, do not chase the money and hone your craft.”
Professor MJ Xavier, former VC of Karunya University and the Founding Director of IIM Ranchi, likewise asked the students not to get affected by the exam pressures. He also asked them to follow their dreams. AK Pattabiraman, Accreditation Head at TCS, on the other hand said that the rumours about the lay-offs are just exaggerated and engineering students must not worry about that.
Panneerselvam said, “Amma Kalviyagam will help Tamil Nadu become one of the top three developed states in Asia by 2023, as per Jayalalithaa’s dream. This initiative also concentrates on skill development.” He further said, “We have plans to start an IAS academy through Amma Kalviyagam and coaching class for bank officers exams and other state government exams.”
