Leader of Opposition M K Stalin has urged the state government to constitute a committee with a High Court judge to streamline the fixing of guideline value and land registration fee in the state.

Asserting that the recent reduction in guideline value by 33% and simultaneous three per cent increase in stamp duty on gifts was detrimental to the economic progress of the state, Stalin, in a statement urged the state government to constituted a committee headed by a High Court judge to consult all stakeholders and regulate and fix a fair guideline value.Â
The DMK working president also asked the government to keep the recent announcement in abeyance and streamline the guideline value to stimulate industrial and economic growth of the state.Â
Referring to the sharp hike in guideline value effected by the AIADMK in 2012, Stalin said the number of registrations had fallen from 35 lakh in 2011-12 to 26 lakh in 2012-13 owing to the drastic upward revision of guideline value then.Â
Claiming that similar fall in registrations had been witnessed during the last few years, Stalin said the hike in stamp duty from one to four per cent for gifts would affect middle-class families. Most of the families transfer properties and the government was making up for guideline value reduction by hiking the stamp duty on gifts, he noted.Â
