Tiruchy prison provides opportunity to inmates for organic farming
In a move to transform criminals into responsible citizens, the Tiruchy Central prison authorities had initiated steps and provided them a field to take up farming a few years ago.

The inmates had enthusiastically commenced cultivating vegetables. Now, officials have planned to undertake organic farming in 100 acres.
Already they have been cultivating paddy, plantain, mango, turmeric and sugarcane. The inmates are also maintaining a fish pond, dairy farm and poultry farm. To carry out all these activities the officials have allocated an area of 67 acres of land inside the Central prison premises.
Now, the prison officials said that there are 289.1 acre in the central prison premises and this can be used for a better purpose. Subsequently, the authorities have planned to take up organic farming in an area of 100 acres for which they have sought directions from their headquarters.
“After getting the official nod, we would take up the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, including guava, pomegranate and grapes. We have also planned to sell them to the public”, said, Nikila Nagendran, Superintendent of Central Prison.
Also, as per the court directive, several seemai Karuvelam trees have been removed. Saplings of 18 varieties of shady trees have been planted in an area of 2 acre land, informed authorities
