According to sources, Divya had given birth to twin girls at a private hospital in Kottar on May 22. Police claimed that Kannan, her husband who was a daily wager, after hearing the birth of twins did not visit the hospital and began  avoiding her.

Upset over this, Divya had taken the babies to her parent’s house at Kannankulam village in Kanniyakumari district on May 29. She tried to contact her husband for two days, but there was no response from him. On the third day, she reportedly held the babies close to her chest and suffocated them to death.

Divya had told her parents and neighbours that the babies had died of asphyxiation, while she was breast feeding them. When Kannan was informed, he came to Divya’s house and took the bodies with him to his native village of Katradithattuvilai and buried them. But, neighbours who grew suspicious over the death of the babies alerted the child welfare department and district child welfare officer Kumudha.

When the officer interrogated, Divya gave contradictory replies and this raised suspicion on her, Subsequently, Kumudha lodged a complaint with the Kottar police, who registered a case against Divya and inquired her.

The mother of the twins maintained that the girl babies had died naturally. Then the bodies were exhumed, on Sunday and doctors confirmed that babies had suffered sudden loss of breath. When Divya was inquired again, she confessed to having killed the babies.

The accused told police that as she already had a girl child and wanted a boy. Unfortunately, as the twins turned out to be girls, she killed them, Divya said. Based on her statement, the sections in the case were altered from suspicious death to murder and Divya was arrested. Kannan was  secured for investigation.
