Shut TASMAC shop, cry women; open outlet, demand tipplers
Tension prevailed for a while at an Ariyalur village when a group of boozers protested to retain the TASMAC outlet to help them get the liquor available in their locality while a group of women was protesting to close the same shop on Friday.
Ariyalur
Protests against opening of TASMAC outlets in residential areas have become routine in Ariyalur district, especially by women. One such protest was organised by a group of women at Variangaval village in Ariyalur district a few days ago and the shop was closed.Â
However, on Friday, the officials opened the outlet at Thevanur Road near Variangaval village. The women from the area staged a protest blocking the vehicular movement at Jayankondam-Senthurai road following which the outlet was closed.Â
Shocked to see the TASMAC outlet shut, a group of around 50 tipplers gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the government and the protesting women. The tipplers said that they have been affected due to the closure of outlets and they can’t lead a life without liquor. They said that they are forced to travel for a longer distance and spend more money for liquor due to the shutdown of many TASMAC shops.Â
They also said that due to the present situation, they had to buy bottles at an exorbitant price illegally. So, they demanded the opening of the closed outlet. Later the police pacified them and assured of favourable action.
