    Big heroin haul in Thoothukudi; hunt on for Chennai supplier

    Three persons, including a shipping company worker, were arrested at Thoothukudi, on Thursday, for trying to sell heroin worth Rs 5 crore. Police are in search of another person from Chennai, who supplied the contraband to them.

    On Thursday night, Thoothukudi Central Police personnel found a car parked at Jayaraj Road in which three persons were consuming liquor. On suspicion, the police checked the car and found packages of heroin inside the car. 

    The trio were taken to Thoothukudi Central Police station for inquiry.  The three were identified as Augustine Gnanaraj, from Thoothukudi, Rameshkumar and Sathish, both from Tiruchirappalli, who were drivers. Augustine, an employee of a private shipping company in Thoothukudi, had obtained narcotics substance from one Ramesh in Chennai and had reached Tiruchirappalli. 

    Then, he had taken the car from Tiruchirappalli to Thoothukudi. He had planned to sell the heroin to a person at Maldives after 10 days. Following the inquiry, they were arrested and handed over to the sleuths attached to Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) from Madurai. 

    Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police, Ashwin Kotnis, in a press meet at Thoothukudi, on Friday, said that there were five kilograms of heroin packed in five packets. 

    The international value of the seized heroin will be around Rs 5 crores. The SP also said they are in search of Ramesh from Chennai. The SP also appreciated the Policemen for swift action and inquiry.
