Corporation schools prove mettle; win government honour, cash award
It was a big success after a year-long effort and the recognition came from the right authority – government – at the right time, when SP Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration, honoured the heads of Corporation schools, which achieved a cent per cent pass in the recently concluded board examinations, on Thursday.
Chennai
While two schools achieved the distinction of registering 100% pass in Class 12 board examinations, 20 others managed to secure ‘all pass’ in the Class 10 results.
A cheque of Rs 1 lakh was presented to the heads of respective schools by the Minister in the presence of Harmander Singh, Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department), and D Karthikeyan, Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation, and other officials.
Dairyalakshmi, headmistress, Chennai girls higher secondary school at Perambur, said her school was the only Corporation-run institution to record 100% pass in both Class 10 and 12 examinations. “Our institution also broke the record of the highest marks scored by a Corporation school in the Class 12 examinations. Earlier, the highest mark was 1,174, but, this year one of our students scored 1,177. It is a proud moment for us to receive the cheque from the minister. All the teachers made a commendable effort to attain this feat. We are also grateful to Govinda Rao, the Deputy Commissioner (Education) and other officials of the department who coordinated through Whatsapp groups, attended coaching programmes and encouraged the students. We will strive to maintain these results, next year too,” she added.
The Corporation had run two programmes that offered additional coaching and provided incentives such as breakfast and snacks so that students are motivated to attend these sessions. In addition, they were made to read Tamil and English newspapers in the school to improve their general knowledge.
Students from Corporation-run schools, who get an admission in engineering or medical colleges, will receive an incentive of Rs 45,000. This will encourage more students to pursue higher education. Last year (2016-17), 85 students from Corporation-run school, who had gained admission to engineering colleges, received this incentive, while two such students, who joined medical colleges, were also extended this benefit. In 2015-16, 149 students made it to engineering colleges. Students who get admissions to art colleges, diploma and nursing courses too were being provided with incentives.
