The examination for the selection of Grade-II policemen was conducted throughout the state. At Chandi Polytechnic College, Raja, working as a warden at Vellore Central Prison, had appeared for the exam and his younger brother, Murugan (21) from Ramanathapuram, too appeared along with him in the same hall. Murugan and Raja had exchanged their question paper and answer sheets. They were caught by the invigilators and sent out of the hall. Muthiapuram police were also informed and a case was booked against them for cheating.

The exam threw traffic out of gear in Rameswaram town as traffic personnel were busy guiding the candidates at the examination centres.

As a result, vehicular traffic at the Thittakudi junction in Rameswaram came to a grinding halt. As the situation went out of control, youngsters swung into action to regulate traffic. They diverted the vehicles along the inner roads to reach the temple and to go out of the town.

Within a span of 15 minutes, traffic was back to normal and all vehicular movements resumed.
