Recording their regret over Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s approval for the recommendation to prorogue the remainder of the budget session, DMK legislators on Tuesday condemned Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and Speaker P Dhanapal for violating all norms and setting a bad precedence for the august Assembly.

In an urgently convened meeting held at the party headquarters, the DMK legislature party said that the Governor had blindly accepted the government’s recommendation (for proroguing the Assembly session). It was not consistent with the duties and authorities enshrined on him to advance the interests of the state, the party added.

Accusing the ruling AIADMK of burying all democratic norms, Constitutional provisions and rules of the state Assembly, the resolution charged the ruling dispensation with abruptly proroguing the session to prevent them from recording the credentials and achievements of DMK president M Karunanidhi, who would be celebrating his diamond jubilee year as MLA shortly.

The principal opposition party also resolved to urge the Governor, CM and Speaker to immediately convene the state Assembly session to vote on demand for grants for various departments.

DMK Whip R Chakrapani and a few MLAs tabled a copy of the resolutions to the Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal, who was understood to have discussed the issue on receipt of the representation.

At the meeting, which also discussed the celebrations of Karunanidhi’s diamond jubilee in the Assembly, DMK working president M K Stalin was learnt to have asked his MLAs to be vociferous in their criticism of the government on the eve of its first anniversary.

The resolution, in which Stalin has laid thrust on Vidyasagar Rao holding additional charge of Tamil Nadu, comes a day after Stalin shot a letter to the Governor in this regard. Though the DMK has been critical of the ruling party on the issue of late, Tuesday’s was the first instance when it has faulted the Governor as well.
