The police said that this was the second attempt of the accused R Udhaya (20), a resident of Shankar Nagar in Mettupalayam, on his wife. In an earlier incident the victim Anandhi (18) had suffered a cut on her head. Mettupalayam police said that the teenager was a resident of Vellikuppampalayam village near Mettupalayam.

The two had married six months ago. Inquiry revealed that the couple often fought and three months ago she left him and went to live with her parents. Since Udhaya frequented her parent’s place asking her to come with him she went to her aunt’s house at Kotagiri.

It is learnt that a couple of weeks ago Udhaya went to Kotagiri and tried convincing Anandhi to come with him. As she refused, he attacked her with a knife, leaving a cut on her head. The police said that her relatives stopped him from attacking her further and also did not lodge a police complaint. Meanwhile, Anandhi, who was under treatment at a local hospital, did not fully recover.

On Monday morning, she was heading to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital (GH) in a government bus. When the bus reached Mettupalayam Taluk Office, Udhaya unexpectedly boarded the bus and asked his wife to come with him but she refused.

He took the victim and the commuters by surprise by brandishing a knife. He stabbed his wife in the chest, jumped out of the bus and fled the scene. Seeing her cry in pain the bus was taken to the Mettupalayam GH where the doctors declared her as dead on arrival.

Mettupalayam police, have registered a case against Udhaya and is on the lookout for him.
