After lull, anti TASMAC stirs resume
Nearly six weeks after the government started relocating over 3,000 TASMAC outlets located on or close to the National and State Highways that were shut down, protests still continue.
Coimbatore
At VK Road in Peelamedu, Coimbatore, women and children participated in a novel protest that was organised by the BJP. The people were present with plates having traditional items like kumkum , turmeric and betel leaf, mostly used for auspicious occasions. The public chorus was that this was all part of a means to criticise the government as women have been most affected by TASMAC outlets. They were arrested as they had not obtained police permission for staging the protest. However they were released later in the day.
“The government is giving free gold to women for marriage so that they get it back when the government pledges or sells it for buying liquor,” a protester said.
Many residents of Olympus 80 Feet Road in Coimbatore City along with the representatives of various political parties picketed a TASMAC outlet that had newly mushroomed in the locality in a shed for the second day on Wednesday. They were pacified by the police and assured that the shop would be closed. The residents said they would resume protests if the shop continued to function.
At Kannankurichi in Salem City, representatives of various political parties and the public picketed an outlet functioning close to the Kannankurichi Police Station and other places frequented by the public.
