The total of 2,820 seats for which the counselling would be held includes 2,515 for the science programmes and 305 for technology programmes. “The varsity has formed two committees to monitor the standard of 21 private colleges affiliated to the university,” he said.

Ramasamy said that they had received around 18,000 applications in 2013. It increased to 22,000 in 2015 and 39,000 last year. “This year we expect it to go higher. There is a marginal increase in the number of seats for various courses from 10 to 15 per cent based on the demand,” he said.

He recalled that all the seats got filled last year.

“In this academic year we are planning to increase the fees for various courses by 25 to 30 per cent,” the VC said and added that even after the hike the fees would be much less than the fees fixed by the government for the engineering and other professional courses.
