Differing views on peak power supply and demand
Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) and the electricity major Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre (SRLDC) have different versions when it comes to the installed capacity and peak power demand in the state.

According to the TANTRANSCO, the state’s demand on Monday was 14,256mw against the installed capacity of 18,104mw. The morning peak demand on Tuesday was 13,387mw while power consumption was 310.645 MU (million units), the daily load despatch centre report said.
However, the SRLDC report stated the installed capacity as 19,259mw compared to TANTRANSCO’s 18,104mw. Wind power generation was 1,010mw against the installed capacity of 7,596mw compared to TANTRANSCO’s 7,686mw, while solar power capacity was 1,590mw compared to the power corporation’s 1,506mw.
Senior officials said that wind, solar, co-generation and biomass power were not part of the installed capacity as they are mostly with private parties. “Wind and solar power would be purchased at specific rates after agreements with private power suppliers when there is need,” they added. But SRLDC officials said that Monday’s solar power generation was 1,309mw, which was diverted to the state power grid.
When asked about peak summer power demand, officials were hopeful that the demand would remain the same and there was nothing to worry about the supply.
