    CM Edappadi K Palanisamy launches five flood prevention projects

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy unveiled a slew of projects undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) across the state through video conferencing at the Secretariat on Monday.

    EPS inaugurated 5 flood prevention works to be carried out at a cost of Rs 140 crore. The works are to be executed in Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil and Panruti. PWD would widen the drainage channels and strengthen the distribution channels in these areas as announced by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the 2016-17 budget. Other PWD related works costing Rs 155.92 crore are also launched by the Chief Minister on the occasion. 

    He opened the completed works of new check dams, renovation and strengthening of bed reservoirs, new reservoirs, modernising supply channels and strengthening vents and sluices in existing reservoirs in Coimbatore, Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Kancheepuram, Kanniyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Tiruchy, Pudukkottai, Thoothukudi and Vellore at a cost of Rs 142.30 crore.

    A new bridge across the Varaganadhi in Periyakulam would come up at a cost of Rs 3.75 crore. A causeway across the Perumanadu reservoir at Ilupur in Pudukkottai district costing Rs 1 crore, service road on the shores of the Vaigai River in Paramakudi taluk in Ramanathapuram district at Rs 4.03 crore and four government buildings at Adyar in Chennai are part of the works to be undertaken by the PWD. 

    Awards for engineers The Chief Minister also presented awards to the best engineers for the year 2015-2016. Chief Engineer V Shanmugam and SE R Selvaraj bagged the certificate and shield for effectively maintaining the Sathanur dam in Tiruvannamalai. The CM presented a cheque for Rs 10,000 each to engineers R Govindarajan, S Arunagiri and M Ramesh. Labour Minister MC Sampath and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan were present.
