Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had in February last announced the decision to make mandatory wearing of helmet by the riders and pillion riders. The decision was taken in view of rising fatal road accidents involving two wheelers.

Police have conducted special rallies in recent days highlighting the importance and necessity of using helmets. Narayanasamy himself flagged off one such rally here.

A spot fine of Rs 100 would be slapped on those found violating the helmet rule, police said. Attempts were made twice in the past to bring in the compulsory helmet rule, but it was not implemented strictly. With the ruling coming into force from Monday, shops selling helmets witnessed heavy rush since this morning. Meanwhile, AIADMK (Amma) has urged the government to relax the rule.
