They garlanded the statue of Bharathiar and took a pledge to buy books regularly and never stop reading in their life. They also promised that they would take the habit to their friends and family members.

Muthumurugan, Founder, Bharathiyar Memorial Trust, said that students were also presented a book on biography of Bharathiar. A small book fair comprising only Bharathiar books was also arranged at Bharathiar’s house, informed Muthumurugan.

World Book Day is an initiative of UNESCO to encourage book reading among the people and it is the 20th year of celebrations. Several events were organised by the government and various NGOs to encourage book reading among children.
