    Prizes for best BC hostels distributed

    Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, S Valarmathi, gave away prizes for the best BC hostels in the state between 2016-17 on Thursday.

    P Saravanan, P Grace Arokiamary and B Ramaraj, graduate wardens of the BC hostels in Ramanathapuram, Susiapparpattinam (Sivaganga district) and Tirunagar (Madurai district) were awarded the first, second and third prizes respectively. 

    Reviewing the performance of the department, Valarmathi ordered officials to ensure that inmates were provided with quality food and safe and healthy lodging facilities. Stating that 1,247 of the 1338 hostels in the state were functioning in own buildings, she said infrastructure for 55 hostels were under construction, while the remaining 33 hostels would be provided with the facility within 2017. 

    Valarmathi added that the government would bear an additional burden of Rs.12.19 crore due to hike in the monthly food allowance for boys from Rs 875 to Rs 1,000 and from Rs 755 to Rs 900 for girls.
