Woman gets lifer for murder
The Coimbatore court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a 56-year-old woman as she was found guilty of murdering her widowed daughter-in-law. The convict N Mani lived at Nagammanaickenpalayam near Sulur and worked in a private mill.

Their son Chandrasekar had married Pirija (27) of Kozhinjampara in Palakkad, Kerala and had two children. A few years ago Chandrasekar died and Pirija lived separately with her children. In due course she fell in love with Palanisamy (32) from the same locality.Â
Mani did not approve of the relationship and asked her daughter-in-law to marry her younger son but Pirija refused. On December 2, 2015, when Pirija was alone at home, Mani hacked her to death. The First Additional District Judge, on completion of the trial awarded life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Mani. Mani was lodged in the convict ward of the Coimbatore Central Prison in the late hours of Tuesday.Â
In another case, the principal District Judge of Coimbatore R Pongiappan awarded life term to Kannan, a mason for murdering his wife Shanthi. The couple lived in Gomangalam near Pollachi with their two children. Suspecting her fidelity, he often quarrelled with her. Unable to bear the torture she sought her parent’s help. They tried for a compromise with the help of police. On way back to Pollachi after the talks, Kannan strangulated Shanthi and threw her body into a well.
