Official sources said the annual ban was enforced by  the district administration through Fisheries Department  to facilitate breeding of fishes and conservation of fish  stock in marine ecology.

They said as mandated by the Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, 1983, the ban was enforced for "conservation  of species propagation" during the breeding season.

The ban will end on the midnight of May 29. However, this year the state government has been considering suggestions to extend the ban period to  60 days.

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that a final  decision in this regard would be taken after holding talks with the fishermen community and various  organisations.
During the ban, more than 10,000 mechanised boats  from about 500 villages across the 15 coastal districts  of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will keep off sea.
"Any violation will attract a penalty under Sec 5 of  the Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, 1983'', official sources said.
