    In late night ops, Ariyalur residents demolish liquor shop

    In a surprise incident, a temporary building constructed for a TASMAC outlet in Ariyalur, went ‘missing’. When the officials came to load stocks on Monday morning, they learnt that some people had demolished the building at night. Meanwhile, a series of protests were staged against TASMAC outlets in residential areas.

    Sources said, after closing the TASMAC outlet near Ariyalur bus stand, officials had constructed an outlet at RS Nagar near Ammakulam, Ariyalur and the residents of Ammakulam, Rengasamudram, Subrayapuram, Krishnapuram had submitted a petition to the district collector opposing it. 

    However, officials paid no heed and came to stock liquor on Monday. They were shocked to see the outlet razed to the ground. Ariyalur police have registered a case. On Monday, the residents staged a protest before the outlet and blocked the Perambalur-Thanjavur road. 

    Similarly, a series of protests were staged across the delta districts. In Kumbakonam, the public opposed the TASMAC outlet established near AnnanAgar crematorium and resorted to a road blockade, on the Kumbakonam-Thanjavur road. On information, the Thanajvur tahsildar held talks with the agitating people. Later, the residents downed shutters condemning the shifting of the TASMAC outlet in residential areas. Meantime, a section of residents from Tiruchy garlanded empty bottles and submitted a petition to the District Revenue officer K Tharpagaraj.
