    Tamil Nadu Governor (incharge) Ch Vidyasagar Rao administered the oath of office to Justice Banerjee at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan. 

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan were also present.

    Before being elevated as the Chief Justice of Madras HC following the elevation of former chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul to the Supreme Court, she was the number two in the Delhi High Court. 

    Justice Banerjee brings with her around 32 years of experience, including more than 15 years as a judge. She enrolled as an advocate in July 1985 after completing her schooling and college education in Kolkata. Thereafter, she was appointed as permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on February 5, 2002. She was transferred to Delhi High Court on August 8, 2016 and now she has been shifted to Tamil Nadu as Chief Justice. 

    She is the second woman Chief Justice the chartered Madras High Court has had so far. Later, replying to welcome speeches of Advocate General at the High Court, she sought the cooperation of lawyers to enable the High Court discharge its constitutional obligation. 

    “For any High Court to discharge its constitutional obligation, we need the cooperation of lawyers and I am thankful to you for the cooperation you have just assured,” she said.
