Surplus budget presented for Coimbatore
In the absence of the Mayor and council, the Commissioner and Special Officer of Coimbatore Corporation K. Vijayakarthikeyan presented a Rs. 13.04 crore surplus budget earlier this week.

Dr. Vijayakarthikeyan said that the surplus budget amount was derived on the revised guidelines of the State government according to which the demand and 70 per cent of the arrears should be considered as income. The estimated revenue receipts for the fiscal 2017-18 is Rs. 1,072.42 crore against the estimated expenditure of Rs. 1,059.38 crore, he said.Â
About the current financial year, he said that the revised income and expenditure stand at Rs. 874.95 crore and Rs. 958.51 crore, resulting in a deficit of Rs. 83.51 crore. The commissioner said that there are not many new projects that would be kick started in the coming financial year. Among key projects for the coming financial year is the Smart City Project.Â
Pilot projects to be tscaled up this year include installing more air quality monitoring devices and procurement of sensor-based bins that would facilitate corporation staff to know if the bins were full. Another major project is the multi-level car parking facility at three places for Rs 80 crore.Â
The corporation would also establish a construction waste management plant with a capacity of 100 metric tonnes at Rs 100 crore. On establishing the integrated bus stand for town, mofussil and omni buses at Vellalore, he said that as asked by the government they have prepared another DPR with a detailed traffic study on the approach roads.
