In the petition filed by Raju, from Ramanathapuram, he had claimed that after Katchatheevu was given to Sri Lanka, fishermen from Tamil Nadu were denied traditional fishing rights assured to them in the agreement between the two countries.Â
Whenever fishermen fish near Katchatheevu, the Lankan Navy arrested them and so far, more than 600 fishermen have been killed. Similarly, when Rameswaram fishermen were fishing near Katchatheevu, they were shot at by the Lankan Navy on March 6 resulting in the death of Bridjo. The Lankan Navy personnel should be brought to India to face justice, prayed the petitioner. The bench adjourned the case to April 11.
