Sulur MLA threatens CM, later backtracks
One more All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLA from Coimbatore district has threatened to withdraw his support for Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy. A video of a telephonic conversation of Sulur MLA R Kanagaraj threatening to withdraw support to the CM went viral on the social media, late on Saturday night, leaving party cadre and functionaries in a fix.

The MLA admitted making the threat if his demand for action against a stone quarry where two labourers were killed at Pachapalayam in Sulur Assembly seat, on Friday were not met. “What is the use of being an MLA if I cannot redress the grievance of my people,” he said. However, on Sunday evening he said that he has stepped down from his earlier decision as his demands were met by the government.
On Saturday morning Kanagaraj took part in the government programmes in which the Chief Minister participated in Coimbatore. Later he visited the stone quarry in which the two labourers were killed when a pile of stones fell on them the previous day.
Unhappy with the action, the officials and police initiated against the quarry owner, he threatened to withdraw his support to the CM if his demands for strict action against the illegal quarrying were not met.
“I am not afraid of the CM… CMs change every three to six months… Edappadi will lose an MLA,” he said in that video. Talking to reporters on Sunday morning Kanagaraj said that he would get relieved from the responsibility of MLA or join another faction. When reporters asked if he would join the O Panneerselvam camp, he said “I will join the side where people want me to go.”
However, the incident has set a bad precedent for other MLAs, who may threaten the Chief Minister, feel party sources.
