Fishermen stir still on at Rameswaram
Notwithstanding having temporarily withdrawn their protest, Rameswaram fishermen on Tuesday continued their strike and stayed away from venturing into sea in condemnation of the shooting a fellow fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy.
Madurai
Tuesday marked the eighth day of strike in a row and fishermen asserted that their strike would continue till March 20. K Bridjo (21), a fisherman from Thangachimadam near Rameswaram, was allegedly shot dead in mid-sea on March 6 by Sri Lankan Navy.Â
After Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Pon Radhakrishnan assured the protesters that their demands would be considered, fishermen suspended the protest and received the body Bridjo for cremation.Â
Fishermen have already announced that they will resume the protest from March 21 if they were not able to meet the External Affairs Department Secretary by March 20.Â
Meanwhile, the kin of 32 fishermen from Kanniyakumari district who were arrested by the British Navy have demanded the Centre to rescue the fishermen.
