Stalin seeks allies support to fight AIADMK
A day after the BJP obliterated Congress and stormed to power in UP, DMK Working President MK Stalin on Sunday publicly invited the PWF (People’s Welfare Front) and other Opposition parties to rally behind him to defeat the AIADMK regime, particularly in April 12 RK Nagar bypoll.
Chennai
Stalin, who was among the first to Congratulate the BJP for the resounding victory in UP, sprung a surprise on Sunday morning by appealing to the Opposition parties, especially PWF to join them to teach a lesson to the ‘benomi’ AIADMK government of Edappadi K Palanisamy which was being guided by VK Sasikala.
Responding to a pointed media query at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam, the DMK Working President said the PWF parties should consider his statement as invitation and the result of RK Nagar bypoll should protect democracy in Tamil Nadu.
“Whether it is the communist or other parties, they should come forward to back the DMK candidates,” Stalin said, apparently trying to woo the Left parties who have consciously kept a safe distance away from the DMK since 2009 when the communists quit the UPA-I over the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Notably, the PWF constituents have expressed their willingness to field their own candidate in R K Nagar. Though the invitation may appear general in its tone, the political undertone of the statement could not be overlooked considering that Stalin’s call for union of Opposition parties comes a little over a day after TNCC President Su Thirunavukkarasar had publicly extended his unequivocal support to the DMK in the RK Nagar.
We will respond to Stalin’s call soon, says PWF
The call by DMK Working President MK Stalin to unit and dethrone the AIADMK government has made leaders from Peoples Welfare Front (PWF) to go into a hustle on Sunday. The PWF claimed that they will respond after conducting a meeting to weigh their options. Thol Thirumavalavan, VCK chief said that he would hold discuss with leaders from Left parties.
“It is a serious call and we cannot react immediately. We will respond to the call after conducting discussions with our political partners,” he said. Similarly, R Mutharasan, State Secretary, CPI, said, “We will reveal our stance on the matter to VCK and CPM after the CPI council meeting that is scheduled for March 13.”
Aazhi Senthilnathan, a Political Analyst said, “Stalin’s call cannot be taken lightly as it assumes political significance at this juncture.” He added that if the PWF joins DMK, it will face better prospects in the future and at the same time there is also logic in them joining the AIADMK. “However, facing this election alone will not bode well for them,” he noted.
O Panneerselvam camp forms Governing Council to pick candidate
A couple of days after the VK Sasikala camp reconstituted the Governing Council of the ruling AIADMK by appointing her as its head to decide on the party’s candidate for the next month’s RK Nagar Assembly bypolls, the rebel camp too came up with its own team on Sunday.
The AIADMK rebels, led by former CM O Panneerselvam came up with the new list of Governing Council members, countering the one formed by AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran on March nine. To counter it, the rebel group on Sunday announced the list of Governing Council members. In the absence of a full time General Secretary (following the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa), E Madhusudhanan on Sunday, announced the constitution of the new Governing Council headed by him. Madhusudhanan said he was constituting the committee in his capacity as the Presidium Chairman of the AIADMK. In a statement here, he said the Governing Council would consist of Panneerselvam, party seniors like C Ponnaiyan, V Maitreyan (Rajya Sabha MP), former Ministers S Semmalai and Ma Foi K Pandiarajan, Manoranjitham Nagaraj, K Manickam, MC Munusami, R Gopalakrishnan, RB Maruthraj, J Jeyasingh Thiyagaraj Natterjee, P Senguttuvan and S Sheikh Ayub. It may be recalled that a couple of hours after the Election Commission issued the notification for the bypoll to the RK Nagar Assembly constituency on March 9 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK had reconstituted the Governing Council making General Secretary Sasikala (since jailed in a corruption case) as its Chairperson.
