The passenger identified Cholamukath Kareem Sajid of Malappuram district in Kerala had concealed 10 gold bars each weighing 116 grams in his rectum. The gold was valued at approximately Rs 32 lakh.

Sleuths from the DRI got specific information that a passenger, who would reach Coimbatore from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight during the early hours of Saturday, was smuggling gold into the country.

Acting on the tip off, the DRI team intercepted Sajid, who alighted at the Coimbatore at 4.10 am. During questioning, he gave contradictory replies and this triggered suspicion in the sleuths. Later, he was taken to a private hospital where a scan showed that he had 10 metal substances concealed in his rectum. A stomach wash was carried out and the gold bars were recovered.

Inquiries revealed that Sajid used to often visit Gulf countries on a tourist visa and smuggle gold into the country on his return trip. But, this is the first time he has been caught. It is learnt that he flew to Sharjah a few days ago from an airport in Kerala. Fearingss that he could be caught if he returned to India through Kerala, Sajid changed his destination to Coimbatore.
