Don’t politicise docs’ role in Jayalalithaa’s treatment: IMA

Doctors associations on Tuesday came together in an attempt to stop the politicisation of the illness, treatment and death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Assuring that the treatment modalities were as per book, they added that rumour- mongering would result in trust deficit between doctors and patients.

Both the Indian Medical Association-Tamil Nadu State Branch and the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the politicisation of the former CM’s illness, treatment and death last year.

Following the release of report by the state government on Monday that outlined the details of her state during admission and the treatment modalities, the doctors said that there was no doubt that the best of treatment was given and considering the co-morbidities, there were several complexities that influenced her condition time and again.

Talking to DTNext, Dr TN Ravishankar, President of the IMA-Tamil Nadu State Branch, said, “The doctor should not be put under a political cloud. The former CM had a lot of co-morbidities that changed her condition time and again.

The social media has done great damage by passing on unverified information. There is no reason to doubt the integrity of the doctors. Tamil Nadu has world class treatment facilities and the hospital where she was treated provided her the best of it.”

Similarly, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council said that the rumour-mongering shouldn’t result in a trust deficit between doctors and patients. “The government can provide the information that it thinks should be released, as it is the head of the state. There is no contradiction in the reports from the doctors who carried out the treatment. No one can doubt the mode and quality of treatment. Hospitals shouldn’t become reluctant about treating celebrities and politicians in future, as a result of this,” said Dr K Senthil, President, TNMC.
