The constable, Velmurugan from Kuchanur in Theni district, attached to Odaipatti Police, who was an ardent follower of Jayalalithaa came into limelight in 2014 when Jayalalithaa was sentenced to prison in the disproportionate assets case.
Velmurugan tonsured his head in police uniform and prayed for release of Jayalalithaa. When Jayalalithaa died on December 5 he had informed that he would resign and begin a service in the name of Jayalalithaa.
In the meantime, when the Supreme Court sentenced AIADMK General Secretary, VKSasikala, and two others, he spoke against her. It is said that he had openly stated that if someone from Sasikala’s team contests in RK Nagar constituency he would fight against them. Hence, he was issued a suspension order on Tuesday for speaking against Sasikala.
On Wednesday morning,g he staged protest, in uniform, in front of the statue of Pennycuick with the sole demand of setting up a judicial inquiry to probe into the death of Jayalalithaa. Police received the information, reached the spot and held talks with him. But, he refused to come with them and was taken into custody.
